Fourth of July weekend affords Americans the opportunity to collectively celebrate and give thanks for freedom in our land. It’s important to set aside time to do this. God has blessed this country with resources and liberties people of other nations and other times of history could only dream of. We never deserved this. Yet every good thing comes from God, and he deserves our praise for the freedoms we find ourselves enjoying.
There’s another freedom, though, that we can’t forget either. It’s a freedom that’s greater and far more permanent than those protected in the Bill of Rights.
It’s freedom that comes from a holy God who says he loves sinners. It’s the liberation found in divine love that never, ever fails. It’s an independence from the penalties for what we’ve done wrong, an independence no one can take away. It’s a citizenship in a heavenly land we can call home where freedom reigns, where justice never fails, and where prosperity flows to everyone.
The Word of God brings freedom—the greatest freedom of all. Through his Word, God works our salvation. Delight in the Word of God. Return to it again and again. His good commands, his constant guidance, and his unfailing love offer freedom you won’t find anywhere else.
We pray you have a blessed Independence Day weekend. We also pray that you are blessed even more by the Word of God and the ultimate freedom he gives.
“May your unfailing love come to me, Lord,
your salvation, according to your promise;
then I can answer anyone who taunts me,
for I trust in your word.
Never take your word of truth from my mouth,
for I have put my hope in your laws.
I will always obey your law,
for ever and ever.
I will walk about in freedom,
for I have sought out your precepts.
I will speak of your statutes before kings
and will not be put to shame,
for I delight in your commands
because I love them.
I reach out for your commands, which I love,
that I may meditate on your decrees.”
