The Wisdom of Silence

There’s a lot of noise out there. It seems everyone has an opinion on everything. Do we have to respond to all of it? Does every comment, every viewpoint, and every differing opinion warrant a reaction?

Sometimes silence is bad. In the face of evil or injustice, God calls his people to speak up for others. Wherever there is guilt or despair, God sends his people to proclaim good news.

But sometimes there’s wisdom in saying nothing. Sometimes it’s best to simply let comments go with no response. Sometimes joining in on the discussion only makes things worse and can even lead us into sinful ways of speaking.

How do you know when it’s best to speak up and when it’s best to be silent? Wisdom determines that.

God give us the wisdom to boldly speak when it will truly be a blessing and to humbly be silent when our voice is not required.

“I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked” (Psalm 39:1).
