We might get a pat on the back or “aw”s from people who notice the nice things we do. We might get thank yous and recognition. Or we might not.
It’s not so much the nice things we do for others as the reason we do it. Jesus teaches us what it means to show love to others and the why behind it.
Not for praise. Not for the thanks. Not to look good.
But because other people need our mercy and love. People matter. People are made with intrinsic dignity and value.
They’re worthy of our love.
So that’s why we show love.
“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
(Luke 10:36-37)
