Jesus said, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. . . . Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:35-36,40)
That doesn’t really sound like social distancing, does it? We’re living in unique times. But limitations on the size of gatherings doesn’t make the activity of Jesus’ church screech to a halt. Technology (old and new) provides wonderful ways to keep reaching out with love and the gospel of Jesus, even if we don’t see each other in person.
You can write a letter. You know there’s someone who would be tickled to see your words written by hand.
You can pick up the phone. You don’t even have to have a conversation starter. Just let the person know you’re glad to hear their voice and wanted to hear how they’re doing.
You can post and share. Almost everyone’s on social media. Bring grace, calm peace, and a lot of Jesus to the world wide web.
You can smile. You’re still seeing people. When you do, smile. You don’t know what an impact that can have on someone whose life is smile-starved right now. Let people know (strangers as well as kin) that you’re genuinely happy to see them.
You can communicate Christ. Wherever and however you do interact with other people, season your conversations with the gospel of Jesus. He is what is needed most.
We’re still reaching while distancing. And don’t forget: Whatever you do for someone else, you’re also doing for Jesus.
We'd love to hear from you.
