Burning

So much of the west is burning right now. The smoke from the fires is making the air quality in Idaho poor, and it leaves a perpetual haze in the sky. Far worse than that, homes and entire towns are destroyed, while some have lost loved ones to the blaze.

It’s horrible.

It’s also a reminder of what’s to come. The Last Day will come when people don’t expect it, and everything will be set on fire.

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat” (2 Peter 3:10-12).

Live today like it’s the end, because it might be. Only we won’t be left to weep on the Last Day. The destruction means God’s starting over. He’ll make everything new. A new heavens and a new earth where no more death, loss, pain, or hurt can ever touch us again.

The day is coming. “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28).
