Given the choice, you’d take a promotion over a demotion. No one wants to be taken down a notch. It’s tough to get laid off, fired, or moved to a worse position. It’s the promotion everyone’s after.
Unless you’re God. God’s already at the top, but do you know what he did? He took a demotion. He made himself lower—much lower. He gave up the throne, the glory, the angels, and the majesty. He came to be born out in the cold and laid in a manger. He came to live a lowly life of rejection and homelessness. He came to suffer and die in your place.
When he came on Christmas, that was the biggest demotion ever.
Why did he do it? So you can be promoted.
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).
