A Foot in Both Worlds

If it seems like Christians are feeling conflicted right now, it’s because they are. Always have been and will continue to be.

There’s a tension in the lives of people who believe in Jesus and trust him to live forever. The tension comes from standing with a foot in both worlds: life on earth and life forever in heaven.

It’s a healthy tension, though. When this life seems so messed up and it’s hard to find hope, God’s people can lean into his kingdom and remember they are already called citizens of heaven. They belong in a perfect world where everything is right. They’re passing through a world that is itself passing away.

At the same time, from a position of security and peace, Christians still live here. And as they also lean into this world, they have a job. Share hope. Make Christ know. Spread the light of God and his love. Make a difference wherever God has them.

Till God takes his children home, they’ll always feel a little stretched in two directions, because they have a foot firmly planted in both worlds.

For now, that’s a good thing.

“They are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one” (John 17:14-15).
