The Rainbow

You see a lot more rainbows in the month of June. Not necessarily real rainbows in the sky, but multi-colored flags and decorations for Pride Month.

Did you know God invented the rainbow? He made it to be a reminder in nature.

A reminder that he is a holy God who is serious about sin. Judgment must come when evil and immorality continue unchecked.

A reminder that he is powerful enough to send a worldwide flood to destroy everything and start over with Noah and his family.

A reminder that he is also a God who makes gracious promises. Never again will the world be destroyed by a massive flood.

He makes other promises, too. While adherence to sin will keep you from inheriting the kingdom of heaven, you can be washed, sanctified, and justified. He has removed your guilt as far as the east is from the west. Jesus carried your shame and your sin when he went to the cross. God loves all people—everyone. God says anyone—absolutely anyone—who believes in Jesus will not perish but have eternal life with him.

The rainbow is a reminder that God makes promises and keeps them. No worldwide flood has ever come since the time of Noah. How about the promises of forgiveness, fresh starts, lifted burdens, and eternal life? Will he keep them, too?

Look at the rainbow.

“And God said, . . . ‘I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth’” (Genesis 9:12-16).
