“I promise”

They’re important words. Ones not to be taken lightly. Don’t say them unless you mean them. Unless you plan to follow through.

God makes promises. To us. And he doesn’t take them lightly. In fact, he likes to make promises in terms of covenants. Official, binding agreements he guarantees he’ll follow through on.

The biggest covenant promise? He forgives you. Totally, completely, unconditionally. You don’t have to prove yourself first. You don’t need to shape up and be good enough first. You don’t need to reach him first.

He comes to you. He loves you. He forgives you. All the bad—he won’t remember it anymore.

Because he made a covenant with you. It’s his way of saying, “I promise.”

And he doesn’t take those words lightly.

“I will make a new covenant. . . . I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Jeremiah 31:31,34)
